Silk Screen Prints - first results

These are the results of my attempt at Silk Screen prints. I chose to print the poster for the Swimming without water exhibition. This poster had a lot of typographical detail, so it was quite a complex design to try out first time. The results are a bit mixed; there is parts of the design where too much ink has flooded the paper, and parts where not enough ink has penetrated the screen. This is probably down to the fact that I didn't have the correct squeegee to push the ink onto the screen. On the plus side, you can get a good overall impression of the design but without the fine detail I was hoping for. The prints give a vintage aged look, which reflect the design style and influence.
Overall I found the process quite frustrating, but got some good advice from contributors at stencilrevolution.com. Not having the right tools for the job also hindered me, but will attempt some more prints when I have a design that is suitable.

Silk Screen Priniting Experiments

I have recently been interested in producing silk screen prints and really wanted to learn the process having never done it before. So I bought myself some equipment and decided to give it a try at home.
I experimented using the photo stencil technique, which printing the design onto clear acetate and exposing this 'negative' onto the silk screen which has been coated with photo emulsion.
After exposing the screen to about 45 minutes of a bright 150watt lamp, then washing the screen to clear the exposed parts, you then get an image of the design for printing.
Using a mixture of Acrylic paint and screen printing medium, I experimented with printing onto good quality handmade paper.

Swimming Without Water Art Exhibition - Poster Design

Poster designed for a forthcoming Art exhibition. The exhibition is taking place at Moseley Road Baths, an grand old Edwardian swimming baths.
The concept for the poster design were old Victorian & Edwardian bill posters. I took these as an inspiration to produce a contemporary update on these styles.
The exhibition runs from 18th February 2010, and is being supported by the City council, Birmingham City University, the 2012 Olympics commitee and the Arts Council.
Hopefully this exhibition could be the start of a new chapter for this wonderful building.
The project also includes a website, which I will post more details about when it is finished.

The book covers were designed as a complete set and included designs for Audiobook CD's and digital downloads.

Royal Shakespeare Company designs

These are two poster designs I did to coincide with the Royal Shakespeare Company's 'Histories' season.
The two plays I chose were Henry V & Richard III.
I tried to make a more contemporary design whilst incorporating the traditional look of the RSC.
The Henry V poster had an anti-war theme whilst I adapted kidnapping and ransom notes for the Richard III poster.

Samaritans Recruitment Project

This poster design was for a design competition to attract more volunteers as Samaritan workers.
I tried to sum up the attributes needed to be a volunteer and present them in a modern eye-catching way using a typographical response.
Included in the campaign were teaser billboard posters and a Flash banner advert for on-line recruitment.
